Unfortunately when I flip that "switch", my screen gets totally messed up with horrible washed out colors and all sorts of artifacts. 10-bit comes out to 1024 unique colors per channel, and 12-bit brings us all the way to 4096. A 16-bit RGB or LAB image in Photoshop would have 48-bits per. The 8 possible voltage levels of each color channel are called bits. Red, green, and blue are the primary colors of light, and combining them in different proportions allows us to create any color we can see. 8 bit greyscale does not give sufficient vertical resolution, while 16 bit does, and allows GIMP like Photoshop to be used for mapmaking. You aren’t making it any worse, only better.
